2004 Friend of NYSOMA – Jan Resch
The Friend of NYSOMA Award was established by the Board of Directors to honor the service of individuals who, through personal action, demonstrate in an extraordinary way, those social values affirmed to the goals of New York State Odyssey of the Mind. The inscription on the plaque reads: “In recognition and appreciation of unique talents and creative energies offered on behalf of NYSOMA”
The plaque will be displayed each year at the New York State Odyssey of the Mind Finals. The honorees receive a plaque and have their names engraved on the State Plaque, which is displayed at the State Finals Tournament.
The recipient of the 2004 Friend of NYSOMA Award is Jan Resch.
Jan Resch began her Odyssey as her oldest son was a team member in 1985. The next few years her involvement consisted of transporting both her sons to and from meetings. 1989 brought the first coaching experience for Jan when the coach of her youngest son’s team decided not to coach any more. The first year she coached, her team went from sub regional to regional to the state tournament and on to the world tournament. Jan was asked to apply as region 14 director and was selected in 1991. She served in that position for 3 years, also serving the following 2 years as tournament director. In January 1996 she was elected to the state board, becoming chairperson of the board in July 1996, assistant state director in July of 1997, and state director in August 1998. Prior to World Finals 2001-2002, she was instrumental in forming the guidelines for a new association director’s organization. Health issues forced her resignation in February 2003.
Jan continues to foster creativity in those she contacts daily.
NYSOMA proudly recognizes and appreciates all that Jan has contributed to the Odyssey of the Mind program over the years
